A Championship Legacy
Few names carry more weight in Abington soccer than Randy Garber. A 1972 graduate of Abington Senior High School, Garber went on to become a two-time NJCAA All-American at Mercer before earning All-American honors at Penn State in 1974. He represented the United States on the U.S. National Team, earning his cap in a 1975 match against Poland, and played professionally across four seasons in the North American Soccer League and two in the Major Indoor Soccer League, winning a league championship as a rookie.
Garber returned home to lead the program where it all began, serving as head coach of Abington Senior High School for 32 years. In 2025, in his final season at the helm, he reached the summit: Abington defeated West Chester Henderson 3-1 in the PIAA Class 4A championship, capturing the first state title in program history. For that historic run he was honored with the 2025 W. Gene Davis Memorial Award as the Pennsylvania State Soccer Coaches Association Coach of the Year in the 4A classification.
His decades of work have earned him a place in multiple halls of fame, including the Abington High School Hall of Fame, the Mercer County College Hall of Fame, the Southeastern PA Soccer Hall of Fame, and the Montgomery County Coaches Hall of Fame. Coach Pitkow knows that legacy firsthand — he stood alongside Garber as a former player and assistant coach on that 2025 championship staff.
After 32 years and a historic first state championship, Coach Randy Garber has stepped away from the helm at Abington — and he hands the program to someone who stood beside him through that title run. Isaac Pitkow, a former Abington player and an assistant coach on the 2025 championship staff, is the new head coach of Abington boys' soccer. Garber has said the future of the program is in good hands, and that confidence runs directly through Pitkow Player Development.
